A man (or woman) and his (or her) car is the modern cowboy and his horse. It's transport, sanctuary, expression.

I enjoy the thrill of being pushed to tremendous speeds quickly and I like riding around in a vehicle that looks the part.

It's really a lifestyle thing; I don't think my life would be complete without a car that allows me to create a character.

Because I check out and drive as many cars as I want and my car will never get jealous.

Because I can be me in my car without managing to offend everyone else.

To me, automobiles are an art form.

They are one of the last true forms of freedom. I can simply get into my truck and drive to California if my heart so desires. They create memories, relationships, and dreams. They are art in motion, they have their own personality. I could go on for days.

Agreed. Along with the above I have to add on this and say turning a wrench and problem solving is therapeutic to me. I also really enjoy the connections I make with people I otherwise wouldn't (through the culture). Finally, there are very few objects that are artistic, utilitarian, relational, and provide gratification upon improvement. A car has a personality, and is as loyal as you are to it. Therefore, it carries human characteristics which you either want no part of, learn to love, or become infatuated with at first sight. But most of all: I have to say that it makes the world a smaller place. It takes me on adventures and introduces me to people and places I would have otherwise never had the opportunity to experience. It's the only tool I interact with that I can have a bidirectional relationship with.

Because I still don't know and I'm trying to every day of my life. Completely irrational. If this the real reason, I wish to only have the answer the day I'll die.

I have more than enough ways of offending people by choice, it loses its attraction when you find yourself offending everyone accidentally all of the time.

I was just thinking about that, and came to the conclusion that I have no idea, I just do... I guess, for "civilian" cars, it must have something to do with that idea of freedom. Having a car just makes you want to get out there, and then there's the fact that a car is both somewhat of a personal space you can take with you, and something akin to a living organism with a personality, quirks and needs of its own and, most importantly, something you share your stories with.

Kinja'd!!!

As for racecars, it's the engineering, the racing, the history, the everything I guess. Safety measures notwithstanding, drivers still face a very real risk when strapping themselves to a racecar. You take your own life in your hands and hope you and the car are good enough to walk out of it at the end. And then there's the competition itself, with its own history, traditions, rivalries and strokes of genius that turned the tide of races, championships or even battles for position...
